Our Blue Hills Primary School Curriculum

At our Primary School in Blue Hills, we provide students with a superlative holistic educational programme, offering a broad range of academic, cultural, and sporting activities. We focus on fostering individuality, nurturing talent, and instilling confidence in our young students who thrive in our internationally focused and motivating educational environment.

Our teaching and learning programme in the Junior Preparatory school includes a rich balance of both class teaching and specialist subjects, with students engaged in meaningful activities that incorporate all areas of learning and development. We share a weekly class newsletter which provides important information about our daily learning and is a great way to keep in touch with our wider school family. Although we follow the requirements of the South African National Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS), our curriculum is enriched and extended by our Reggio Emilia inspired approach in Grades 1 to 3; the assessment and curriculum guidelines of the Independent Examination Board (IEB); subject specialist teaching; and the incorporation of additional subjects such as Additional Mathematics Extension and Robotics. Sports practices and fixtures are scheduled around our weekly timetable of academic learning and afternoon activities.

As our students enter the Senior Preparatory school stage in Grade 4, they begin a more formal part of their educational journey, supported by specialist tutors who teach both the core learning areas and a number of additional subjects in which they have specific expertise. From Grade 4 onwards, students are required to choose either Afrikaans or isiZulu as their First Additional Language choice, and students in Grades 5-7 move between classrooms for each subject.  Alongside a wide range of academic subjects, our students also benefit from a strong focus on Arts and Culture, and all pupils are encouraged to discover their inner voice and creative self through our comprehensive programme of Visual Arts, Music, Creative Dance, and Drama.
