Exceptional Preschool Education in Midrand

Reddford House Blue Hills nursery school provides an outstanding preschool education for children from 3 months to 6 years of age (Nest to Stage 5). We follow the internationally recognised Reggio Emilia approach to learning, which is discovery-based and enriched by its strong focus on phonics, reading, writing, and mathematics in the older stages. Our students benefit from this strong academic framework, which ensures both an excellent start to their education, and the necessary preparation for the children to move confidently on to Junior Preparatory and beyond.

Why Choose Reddford House Blue Hills Preschool in Midrand?

At our early learning school (ELS) we emphasise collaboration, while also encouraging children to value their individual autonomy, and the student-teacher relationship is founded on mutual respect. Under the nurturing care of our tutors, young learners flourish to become confident, well-rounded and joyful individuals. We celebrate the ideas, theories and creations of every student, fostering an environment that embraces diversity and instils belief in their own abilities. We watch proudly as each child is encouraged to explore their own potential, anchored by a strong moral compass that will support them at school and beyond.

Our normal school day ends at 12:30pm for students in Stages 1 - 4. Stage 5 students finish at 1:30pm from Monday to Thursday and at 1:00pm on Friday. For families who wish to collect their children later (between 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.) our Adventure Zone after-school care is available.

Our Inspired Curriculum

We follow a Reggio Emilia inspired approach to learning. Every child is viewed as competent, creative, curious, and full of potential. Children are at the centre of our curriculum and are encouraged to select and explore topics and activities for themselves, developing deeper engagement, while building independence and curiosity.

Rather than being the target of instruction, children at our pre primary take an active role in their education - that of apprentice and researcher. Many of our activities take the form of projects where children have opportunities to explore, observe, hypothesise, question, and clarify their understanding through discussion. We also encourage children to think about themselves in relation to other children, their family, their teachers and the community, helping them to develop a sense of themselves as part of society, rather than individuals in isolation.

An Engaging and Stimulating Early Childhood Education Environment

At our ELS we have a wide variety of resources and facilities to use inside the classroom or outside on the playground. These have been carefully designed to allow each student to investigate their own unique areas of interest.

Investigative areas that lend themselves to learning in the classroom include:

  • Fantasy corners
  • Reading corners
  • Stimulation Boards
  • Light Boxes
  • Mathematical trolleys
  • Language trolleys
  • Perceptual skill areas
  • Construction areas

Each classroom has a separate age-appropriate set of equipment and toys chosen to challenge each student, while also developing new skills and gaining knowledge.

We developed our art programme to bridge the gap between home and school, so that parents can readily see what is being learnt and we place great emphasis on learning art skills because we believe it plays such an important part in fostering self-expression. Completed artworks are displayed in either the foyer or classroom, to boost confidence and demonstrate the individual creativity of our young students.

Languages at our Preschool

English is our chosen language at our Blue Hills nursery school and is used as the main language of instruction for all ELS students. Our diverse team of staff lends itself to using all eleven of our official languages in class where appropriate and we incorporate songs and rhymes from diverse cultures to celebrate language development.

Heritage Day is one of the highlights of our year, a celebration in which we invite family members and friends to join us to sing and play traditional games with our students, rekindling their own childhood memories and ensuring that traditions are continued.

Our Preschool Facilities

At our Blue Hills nursery school we take inspiration from the Reggio Emilia approach to education and our learning environment and classrooms reflect this. Designed to encourage active enquiry, our resources and room layouts are carefully curated to pique the innate curiosity of our students and encourage them to explore.

Our buildings are ergonomically designed and well-suited to the young learners who use them, while playground equipment is custom made to ensure it meets our unique requirements.  All of our classrooms have en-suite toilets and washing facilities which are easily accessible for our students.

We utilise appropriate technology in the classroom throughout the school day and teachers and parents are able to communicate easily using Class Dojo, iSAMS and e-mail.

Our Nursery School Teachers

Our childcare teachers are carefully chosen for the incredibly special qualities that they bring to our ELS classrooms. At the forefront of this is their passion for working with young children. We welcome teachers who are hard-working, expert in their field, able to take the initiative and go the extra mile for their students, and most importantly - dedicated to supporting and preparing the young learners in their care for a successful and fulfilling life.

Our teachers are all extremely well-qualified and students benefit from their unique experience, knowledge and skills. We often bring together different age groups to participate in activities developed by different teachers, so all our learners gain from our exemplary team of educators.

Activities at our Preschool

Our co-curricular activities form an integral part of our holistic preschool education. These activities allow children to explore, discover and develop skills and talents outside of the traditional learning areas. We encourage all students to participate in these specialised, character-building activities.

Our sport and cultural programme is offered to Stage 4 and 5 children, alongside various mini-sport and cultural activities which are organised each term. Some age-appropriate activities are also organised for Stage 3 and 4 children from the second term onwards.

Activities include: Mini Sports, Craft Club, Lego Club, Eco Club and Drama, Dance, Playball, Introgolf, Monkeynastix and Karate.
